Domain Name Selection and Registration

A web site (which also contains pages) is like a book, on a computer that is part of the internet structure, somewhere in the world.

A domain name is the name of that web site, and also, because the registration process requires a Name Server location to be specified, that indicates the computer on which the web site is to be found.

Registration of a domain name does not confer "ownership"; it is a license to use a domain name, for a specified period of time and under certain terms and conditions.

A Domain Name is composed of 3 parts:

Identity Name

.

Domain Type

.

Domain Country

A Domain Name is often shown as being composed of 2 parts when a Domain Space is considered to be a combination of the Domain Type and the Domain Country ie.

Identity Name

.

Domain Space

The rules for different Domain Spaces vary.

Identity Names:

There can only be one identity name for any particular domain space, but the same identity name can be used in a different domain space.

Considering the individual name "dependabledomains" for example, there is only one "dependabledomains.com.au" domain name, but there can also be a "dependabledomains.net.au", and a "dependabledomains.net" (all licensed by Dependable Domains).

Select an appropriate, available domain space.

Decide which domain type would best suit your purpose eg. .com or .org, and then whether it is important to be recognized as being Australian or not eg. .com.au or just .com.

More detailed information about the different domain spaces to choose from may be found here.

Register the domain name.

A new domain name may be registered with Dependable Domains here.

Registration terms and conditions may be viewed here.

The Name Server information.

The Name Server information comes from the web hosting provider, and if known, can be entered during the registration process. If not known at registration time this information can be entered later.

If web hosting is also purchased from Dependable Domains, the Name Server information will be entered automatically during the registration process.
